The National Zoo is one of the last totally free zoos in the U.S. The National Zoo, not far from The Ellington apartments, is an oasis for nature lovers in the D.C. area. Here you'll find 2,000 animals, housed in both indoor and outdoor habitats, arranged either according to geographic zone or species. If you long to see exotic creatures, like the red panda, head to the Asian Trail exhibit where they reside along with giant pandas, clouded leopards, and giant salamanders. If you want to go on safari, head to the African Savannah where you'll find elephants, lions, cheetahs, gazelles, and gorillas, among other native species of the region. In all, there are eight exhibit areas, as well as five food venues, and several gift shops so you can pick up something to remember your day. Pack your own snack or lunch, and make use of one of the picnic areas. If you have kids in tow, strollers are available for rental. Open every day except Christmas.
